Dear Client,
Apologies for the lack of updates this year, we've been pretty busy...

New Krystalites!

At the start of the year we acquired Smart Hosting and have been very busy bedding in nearly 8,000 clients to their new home in our new datacentre (see below). Everyone is now safe and sound and as a result of the merger we improved Krystal significantly.

2017 Highlights
Team - Now 25 UK staff, up from 12 in January.
Capacity - Totally new London datacentre & network core.
Security - DDOS protection upgraded to 1000Gbps+.
Support - Live Chat is going 24/7 by November!
Upgrades (at no extra cost)
We've improved your plan(s). These are included and already visible in your cPanel.

New Datacentre(s)!
The Bunker has served us brilliantly as a datacentre partner since 2007, however, the very features that make it superb for security - a remote cold-war bunker 20 metres underground - come with power and connectivity limitations at scale. To keep on growing we needed to find a new home.

By chance, the perfect solution appeared when we inherited Netwise as a datacentre supplier from the Blackfoot merger. They had recently built a modern datacentre in London, close to the UK's Internet core. From the first meeting we knew we'd found our future home. Netwise is a young team with plenty of experience operating their own datacentres. They share a similar passion and ethos to Krystal, and we've quickly grown together. We've now placed staff onsite at the datacentre as well as taking up an office presence. All of this is excellent news for our service offering.

Our operation now includes 4 facilities;

Migrations

Some clients are already in the new facility and others will be migrated over the coming months to Netwise House. Plenty of notice will be given. We're taking the opportunity to upgrade the hardware you're on as part of the move. https://krystal.co.uk/upgrades has a full list and you can also check which facility you're in.
New Eco Credentials!
Running servers 24/7 is great for uptime and productivity but less good for the environment. It's estimated that by 2020 global datacentre usage will account for 3% of all CO2 emissions. We've known this for years but simply purchasing carbon credits (which do almost nothing to actually lower global CO2 output) or paying for trees to be planted, often on the other side of the world, doesn't tackle the root of the problem; dirty power generation.

Inspired by the “We Are Still In” movement in the US in the wake of the US's planned withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, we wanted to do our bit and demonstrate civic and environmental leadership here in the UK. I approached the management at Netwise who were incredibly responsive and agreed something needed to be done. Just 3 months later;

And this is truly renewable. No carbon offsets, no planting a tree (though we're looking at doing this too, I like trees) just 100% renewable electricity from sources like the sun, wind and sea. We've gone with Ecotricity, the first company in the UK to offer true 100% renewable energy. They do residential too and switching is a breeze.

We've always chosen technology designed to minimise our environmental impact. We were heavy early adopters of SSD technology, which uses considerably less power for storing data. Netwise have built a facility with a PUE rating of 1.12 (1 is perfect and most efficient datacentres claim 1.2 - 1.4). The final piece of the puzzle was the power itself. By paying a premium for 100% renewable energy we're providing the economic incentive for more solar, wind and tidal facilities to be created, reducing the world's dependence on fossil fuels and creating a path to a cleaner future.

The Future
We currently host 141,743 sites, making us the 8th largest host in the UK.

Where we go next is anyone's guess, but if No. 1 on TrustPilot is anything to go by, it could be the very top. I'm aware that success often destroys the very things that clients love about a company. I won't let that happen to Krystal. We'll continue to scale the reliability, quality and personal touch you've come to expect.

Over the last year we've invested nearly half a million pounds into building a company that's ready for the future and a platform that will support millions of sites. It's been quite the journey so far but I feel like it's just getting started. Some of you have been with us since the beginning, others have joined more recently. I would like to thank you all for your continued custom and patronage, we couldn't have got this far without you.

Krystal will turn 15 next year. We're going to throw a big birthday party and you're all invited. There will be cake.

Kind regards,

Simon Blackler - CEO Krystal Hosting
